Our Story

The Fountain of Hope Foundation was built on the concept of Okenye River which is a small stream of water that originated from a rocky hill near my home, where I was born. The water was coming out from some two rocks on the top of the hill, streaming down into the village. Even though the stream was small its water never dried up completely no matter how severe the drought was. Okenye was the Hope of many women in times of drought, and they could come lining up as early as 3 am to fetch the little dripping water. The wait could be till sunset but just to get that clean water.

Our foundation is built on Hope and resilience like that of the stream. To date there are many women and girls lining up to collect water, but from a different source;the borehole. The community needed support and a helping hand and that is where we come in.

The foundation was stated in 1999 by a group of boys lead by Nelson who came up with an initiative of making a bow hole at the river to contain and hold more water to reduce the time women could take at the stream for them to manage their time well and it was successful. This grew bigger into economic empowerment group for youths and women at kakelo Dudi location and later become the only hope of many poor families in this village and was then Named SOWAKO SELF HELP GROUP.

The group since then found its way to National level and has worked with various organization to change lives both locally and internationally. We have worked with organizations like SEP, ARMSTRONG WOMEN EMPOWERMENT AND HOMABAY COUNTY DIASPORA COMMUNITY.
